Close combat was at the heart of WWII combatives, simple, effective methods designed to keep soldiers alive in the most dangerous situations.

While firearms dominated the battlefield, there were always moments when soldiers found themselves at close quarters, where speed, aggression, and decisiveness made the difference. WW2 close combat training focused on essential strikes, throws, holds, and counters that could be learned quickly and applied under pressure.

At Battalion Martial Arts York, we study close combat as the foundation of our WW2 combatives training programme. Drawing from British, American, and other Allied military training manuals, we focus on core principles rather than endless techniques. The aim is to develop confidence, resilience, and the ability to react effectively when space and time are limited.

Training is delivered in a safe, controlled environment using progressive drills that build timing, accuracy, and adaptability, the same qualities that were vital on the battlefield.
